Just Start: A Creative Mindset
Just Start: Why Perfection Is the Enemy of Creativity

If there’s one piece of advice I’ve repeated more than any other—on my photography podcast, in videos, and in conversations with creatives—it’s this:
Just start.
Not when everything is perfect.
Not when you have the best gear.
Not when you finally feel “ready.”
Just start.
Your First Version Isn’t Supposed to Be Good
This is where most people get stuck. They imagine their first podcast episode, YouTube video, blog post, or creative project needs to represent the best version of them.
It doesn’t.
Your first version has one job: to exist.
The truth is:
- Your first episodes will feel awkward
- Your delivery won’t sound how you imagined
- Your editing skills will improve after you publish, not before
And that’s not failure. That’s how progress works.

Creativity Is Built Through Momentum, Not Mastery
Perfectionism loves to disguise itself as preparation. We tell ourselves we’re “researching,” “planning,” or “waiting for clarity,” when really we’re avoiding the discomfort of being seen.
Momentum changes everything.
When you start:
- You learn what actually matters
- You get feedback instead of assumptions
- You build confidence through repetition
Clarity doesn’t come before action.
Clarity comes from action.
Become Your Own Media Channel
One of the most freeing mindset shifts is realizing you don’t need permission to share your voice.
If you enjoy talking about something:
- Start a podcast — your own talk radio station
- Start a YouTube channel — your own TV show
- Start writing — your own publishing platform
You don’t need a massive audience to make it meaningful. You need authenticity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn in public.
Fun Is a Strategy (Seriously)
Somewhere along the way, creativity became overly serious. Metrics replaced joy. Algorithms replaced play.
But here’s the thing: people feel fun.
They feel curiosity.
They feel honesty.
When you’re enjoying the process, it shows. And when it shows, it connects.
Give yourself permission to:
- Experiment
- Be imperfect
- Laugh at early mistakes
- Grow in real time
The Only Real Failure Is Never Starting
Years from now, you won’t regret the content that wasn’t perfect. You’ll regret the ideas you never shared.
Just Start: A Creative Mindset
So if there’s something inside you nudging you to create—
a story, a message, a perspective—
Start messy.
Start imperfect.
Start today.
Just start.
